Scuba diving is like unlocking a whole new world—except instead of a key, you get fins and a tank. If you’re thinking about getting certified, you might be wondering what your first scuba class will be like. At Dive Buddy Scuba Adventures, we’re here to guide you through every step of the journey with expertise, excitement, and just the right amount of humor. Here’s what you can expect as you embark on your path to becoming a certified scuba diver.
Learning the Basics: Knowledge Development
Before you even get in the water, you’ll start with knowledge development. This part lays the foundation for safe and confident diving. You’ll cover topics like:
How pressure affects your body underwater (spoiler: don’t hold your breath—it’s not a contest!)
The importance of buoyancy control (because no one wants to be the diver bobbing uncontrollably like a lost pool float)
Safe diving practices (because the goal is fun AND safety!)
How to plan and execute a dive (so you don’t accidentally surface in the wrong zip code)
The role of dive tables and computers (yes, there’s a little math, but it’s worth it!)
You’ll complete this learning through classroom sessions, online coursework, or a combination of both. Don’t stress—your instructor is there to help, and no, there won’t be a pop quiz on day one.
Hands-On Practice: Confined Water Training

Now for the fun part! Confined water training takes place in a pool or calm, shallow water, where you get to practice your skills in a controlled setting (no sharks, guaranteed). During these sessions, you’ll learn how to:
Assemble and use your scuba gear (think of it as underwater dress rehearsal)
Clear water from your mask (because foggy vision is only cool in spy movies)
Recover and use your regulator (aka, the thing that lets you breathe—pretty important!)
Achieve neutral buoyancy (so you don’t look like a human yo-yo)
Perform emergency ascent procedures (because knowing how to get to the surface safely is a must!)
Your instructor will be right there to ensure you feel comfortable and confident—no judgment if you do a little victory dance when you get it right.
Gear Up: Understanding Scuba Equipment
Scuba diving requires some essential (and pretty cool) equipment. During your first class, you’ll get to know:
Mask and Snorkel – Helps you see and breathe at the surface (not at the same time, though!)
Wetsuit or Drysuit – Keeps you warm and looking like a proper diver
Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) – Helps you float, sink, and hover like a pro
Regulator and Tank – Supplies your air (pretty important for, you know, breathing)
Fins – Because walking underwater just isn’t practical
Your instructor will guide you on how to properly fit, wear, and care for your gear, so you’re comfortable and prepared before you hit open water.
Taking the Plunge: Open Water Dives
Once you’ve mastered the basics in confined water, it’s time for open water dives! You’ll complete a series of four dives in an actual dive environment—like a lake, quarry, or ocean. This is where the real adventure begins! You’ll:
Apply the skills you’ve learned
Practice navigating underwater (without relying on GPS!)
Experience the excitement of real-world diving (hello, fishy friends!)
After successfully completing your open water dives, you’ll earn your Open Water Diver certification—officially unlocking a lifetime of underwater exploration. Time to start planning that dream dive trip!
